Pour-Over Coffee Guide
Pour-over coffee is a classic brewing method that brings out the pure flavours of coffee. It gives you full control over the brewing process and is popular among coffee enthusiasts. Here's a simple step-by-step guide.
You will need:
✔ Pour-over dripper (Hario V60, Kalita Wave or Chemex)
✔ Coffee filters (customised for your dripper)
✔ Freshly ground coffee (medium-coarse grind, like coarse sand)
✔ Water (preferably filtered)
✔ Gooseneck kettle (for better pouring control)
✔ Scale (for precise measuring)
✔ Timer (to keep track of time)
Conditions and temperature:
Coffee: 15 g per 250 ml water (1:16.7 ratio)
💧 Water: 92-96 °C
Ingredients:
- Coffee: 15-18 grams per 250 ml water (ratio can be adjusted according to preference)
- Water: 92-96 °C hot (not boiling)
How to brew:
1. Preparation
Weigh the coffee: Use a scale and measure your coffee (e.g. 15g coffee to 250ml water).
Heat the water: Boil it and let it rest for about 30 seconds if you don't have a thermometer.
2. Prepare the filter
Rinse the filter with hot water while it is in the dripper. This removes the paper flavour and preheats the brewing equipment. Pour out the rinse water.
3. Grind the coffee
Use a grinder and grind the coffee medium-coarse (like coarse sand). Freshly ground coffee gives the best flavour.
4. Set-up
Place your dripper on a cup or jug.
Pour the ground coffee into the filter and smooth out the surface.
Put cup + dripper on the scale and reset it.
5. Blooming (brewing)
Pour a small amount of water (about twice the amount of coffee, e.g. 30g water for 15g coffee) over the coffee.
Leave it on for 30-45 seconds to release carbon dioxide - this improves the flavour.
6. The actual brewing process
Pour slowly in circular movements from the centre outwards.
Avoid pouring directly on the edges of the filter.
Continue pouring in small batches until you have used all the water.
The entire brewing process should take 3-4 minutes.
7. Adjustment (if needed)
⏳ Going too fast? Grind the coffee finer.
🐢 Too slow? Grind the coffee coarser.
8. Serving
Remove the dripper and filter.
Stir the coffee to mix the flavours.
Enjoy your coffee!
Tips for the best pour-over
✅ Use filtered water - it improves the flavour.
✅ Experiment with coffee-to-water ratios to find your preference.
✅ Adjust the grinder setting if the brewing time is not right.
✅ Keep track of the temperature - small adjustments can make a big difference.
By following these guidelines, you can optimise your pour-over brewing and achieve an even better cup of coffee.
Pour over brewing opens up a world of flavours where you can really taste the nuances of each bean. It's a simple but very satisfying way to make coffee.
